Steve Port Stephens is a stunning coastal destination on the NSW Mid North Coast, known for its pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and abundant marine life. This natural harbour offers a perfect blend of outdoor adventures and laid-back seaside charm, making it a must-visit for nature lovers and water sports enthusiasts.
Highlights & What to See
- Dolphin Watching & Whale Cruises: The bay is home to a resident pod of bottlenose dolphins, and during migration season (May–November), humpback whales pass through. Several operators offer eco-cruises for up-close encounters.
- Tomaree Head Summit Walk: A short but steep climb rewards you with panoramic views of the bay, offshore islands, and the Pacific Ocean. It’s one of the best vantage points in the region.
- Stockton Beach Sand Dunes: Just across the water, these towering dunes are the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. You can explore them on a 4WD tour, quad bike, or camel ride.
- Nelson Bay & Marina: The vibrant hub of Port Stephens, with a waterfront promenade, alfresco dining, and boutique shops. It’s the perfect spot for a relaxed afternoon.
- Shoal Bay & Fingal Bay: Two of the area’s most beautiful beaches, ideal for swimming, snorkelling, and sunbathing. Fingal Bay is also a great launch point for kayaking.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can get a taste of Port Stephens in two days: spend the first day on a dolphin cruise and the Tomaree walk, and the second exploring Stockton Beach and the local beaches. For a more relaxed pace, allow three to four days to enjoy the area’s restaurants, coastal walks, and water sports. It’s also a great stopover for one night on a road trip between Sydney and Byron Bay.
