Plunging 80 metres into a fern-clad gorge, Fitzroy Falls is the dramatic centrepiece of the Southern Highlands' Morton National Park. The roar of water and mist on your face hits you seconds before you reach the lookout, and the surrounding bushland is alive with lyrebirds, wallabies, and ancient gum trees. This is one of NSW's most accessible yet exhilarating waterfall experiences, perfect for a refreshing break between coastal drives or as a standalone nature immersion.
Highlights & What to See
- Fitzroy Falls Lookout – The main viewing platform offers a jaw-dropping, head-on perspective of the waterfall. Go early morning for rainbows in the spray.
- West Rim Walking Track – A 2.8 km return walk along the escarpment edge, with multiple lookouts, picnic spots, and chances to spot lyrebirds scratching in the leaf litter.
- East Rim Walking Track – A slightly longer 5 km loop with quieter views and a more remote feel; great for birdwatching and wildflowers in spring.
- Visitor Centre & Café – Informative displays on local geology and wildlife, plus excellent coffee and homemade cakes with a view.
- Wildlife spotting – Keep an eye out for swamp wallabies, crimson rosellas, and if you're lucky, the elusive platypus in the creek below.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors find 1.5–2 hours sufficient for the main lookout and a short walk. If you want to tackle both the West and East Rim tracks, allow a full half-day – pack a picnic and take your time. The site is compact enough for a quick stop en route to Kangaroo Valley or the coast, but truly rewards those who linger.
