Solitary Islands Coastal Walk
The Solitary Islands Coastal Walk is a spectacular 65-kilometer trail that hugs the dramatic coastline between Coffs Harbour and Sawtell, offering hikers a world-class blend of rainforest, beaches, and rocky headlands. Named for the offshore Solitary Islands Marine Park, this multi-day walk showcases the raw beauty of the NSW North Coast, with opportunities to spot migrating whales, sea eagles, and lush subtropical flora. Whether you tackle a single section or the full route, you’ll be rewarded with ever-changing ocean views and a profound sense of coastal solitude.
Highlights & What to See
- Muttonbird Island Nature Reserve – A short side trip from Coffs Harbour; climb the boardwalk at dawn or dusk to see thousands of wedge-tailed shearwaters and panoramic views of the Solitary Islands.
- Korora Lookout – A stunning clifftop vantage point where you can watch humpback whales during their annual migration (June–November) and spot dolphins playing in the surf below.
- Diggers Beach to Boambee Beach – A pristine stretch of golden sand backed by coastal heath; perfect for a refreshing swim or a picnic with the sound of crashing waves.
- Bongil Bongil National Park – A serene section of the walk that meanders through paperbark swamps and littoral rainforest, home to swamp wallabies and a dazzling array of birdlife.
- Sawtell Headland – The walk’s southern terminus, offering a gentle climb to a historic lighthouse ruin and sweeping views back along the coastline you’ve just traversed.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most walkers take 3 to 4 days to complete the full 65-kilometer trail, camping or staying in coastal accommodation along the way. If you have less time, the best day-walk option is the 12-kilometer section from Coffs Harbour to Sawtell (via Diggers Beach and Boambee Beach), which takes around 4–5 hours and covers the most scenic highlights. For a relaxed pace, allow a full day to explore the northern half (Coffs Harbour to Emerald Beach), including detours to Muttonbird Island and Korora Lookout.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Coffs Harbour – The walk’s hub; explore the marina, the Butterfly House, and the local farmers markets before or after your hike.
- Sawtell – A charming seaside village with excellent cafés and a relaxed vibe; perfect for a post-walk coffee and fish and chips on the beach.
- Dorrigo National Park – About an hour inland, this World Heritage-listed rainforest offers dramatic waterfalls and canopy walks; a great contrast to the coastal scenery.
- Bellingen – A creative country town with artisan galleries, the Bellingen River, and a thriving food scene; ideal for a day trip from Coffs Harbour.
- Solitary Islands Marine Park – Book a snorkel or dive trip to explore the protected reefs and islands; you might see green sea turtles and grey nurse sharks.
