Once a booming gold-rush town, Sofala is now a beautifully preserved time capsule in the NSW Central Tablelands. Its dusty main street, lined with heritage buildings and a handful of quirky antique shops, feels like a film set. The nearby Turon River offers peaceful spots for a picnic or a paddle, while the surrounding hills are laced with walking trails and remnants of old mining claims. This is a place to slow down, soak up the gold-riff raffia atmosphere, and imagine life in the 1850s.
Highlights & What to See
- Sofala Main Street – A living museum of 19th-century architecture, including the Royal Hotel, the old post office, and the historic police station. Don't miss the quirky Sofala Antique Centre for a rummage through gold-rush relics.
- Turon River – Follow the short walking track from the village to the riverbank. In warmer months it's a great spot for a swim or a lazy afternoon with a book. Gold-panning is still possible – ask locals for tips.
- Hill End Historic Site – Just 20 minutes north, this former gold-rush rival is now a heritage reserve with a museum, the famous Royal Hotel, and the hauntingly beautiful Bald Hill cemetery. It's a must-see for history buffs.
- Walking & Cycling Trails – The Sofala–Hill End Road is a scenic drive, but for walkers, the Bridle Track offers a multi-day adventure along the Turon River. Shorter options include the Sofala Heritage Walk (pick up a map from the general store).
- Stargazing – With minimal light pollution, Sofala's night skies are spectacular. Bring a blanket and look up for the Milky Way – especially clear in winter.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can see the main street and river in a couple of hours, but to really absorb the atmosphere, plan a half-day. Many visitors combine Sofala with Hill End, which makes a full-day trip from Bathurst or Mudgee. If you're keen on gold-panning or a longer walk, consider staying overnight at the Royal Hotel or a nearby farmstay.
