Port Macquarie’s coastline is a snorkeller’s playground, with calm, clear waters, vibrant marine life, and easy beach access. Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned snorkeller, the area offers several excellent spots where you can float above colourful fish, curious rays, and even sea turtles. The best conditions are usually from late spring to early autumn when the water is warmest and visibility is at its peak. Grab a mask and fins, and discover the underwater world of this beautiful New South Wales coastal town.
Highlights & What to See
- Shelly Beach – The most popular snorkelling spot, with a protected cove teeming with fish, wobbegong sharks, and the occasional sea turtle. The rocky reef on the northern end is particularly rich in marine life.
- Flynn’s Beach – A quieter alternative with good visibility and a sandy bottom that gradually gives way to seagrass beds, where you can spot stingrays and flathead.
- Tacking Point – Snorkel around the rocky headland near the historic lighthouse for a chance to see larger pelagic species and schools of bream. Best on a calm day with minimal swell.
- Miners Beach – Accessible via a short coastal walk, this secluded beach offers clear water and a healthy reef system. It’s a bit more exposed, so check conditions before heading out.
- Sea Turtles at Town Beach – Green and loggerhead turtles are frequently seen grazing on seagrass just off the main beach, especially near the breakwall. Snorkel here early in the morning for the best encounters.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least half a day to explore two or three snorkelling spots. If you’re keen, a full day will let you hit the highlights at a relaxed pace and still have time for a beachside lunch. For the best experience, plan your snorkelling around a rising or high tide, when water clarity improves and marine life is most active. Many visitors combine a morning snorkel with an afternoon walk on the coastal track.
