Smiths Lake is a serene coastal lake on the Mid North Coast of NSW, just south of Forster. Its calm, clear waters and surrounding bushland create a peaceful escape for kayaking, fishing, and birdwatching. The lake is part of the Wallis Lake system and offers a more laid-back alternative to the bustling beaches nearby.
Highlights & What to See
- Kayaking & Paddleboarding – Glide across the mirror-like lake, weaving through mangrove-lined inlets and spotting waterbirds like pelicans and black swans.
- Fishing – Cast a line from the shore or a kayak for bream, flathead, and whiting; the lake is a popular spot for both locals and visitors.
- Bushwalking – Explore the tracks around the lake, such as the short walk to Smiths Lake lookout, which offers panoramic views over the water and to the ocean.
- Wildlife Spotting – Keep an eye out for kangaroos and wallabies at dawn and dusk, and listen for the laughter of kookaburras in the paperbarks.
- Picnicking – Settle at one of the lakeside picnic tables with a barbecue, perfect for a relaxed lunch with a view.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is enough to enjoy the lake’s main attractions – launch a kayak for a couple of hours, have a picnic, and take a short walk. If you’re keen on fishing or want to paddle the entire lake, allow a full day. Smiths Lake works well as a tranquil stopover on a drive between Port Macquarie and Forster.
