Stretching 45 kilometres from Katoomba in the Blue Mountains to the Jenolan Caves, the Six Foot Track is one of Australia's most storied multi-day walks. Originally a bridle path cut in 1884 to carry tourists and supplies to the caves, it now offers a challenging yet rewarding trek through eucalypt forests, across the Kowmung River, and past the dramatic limestone formations of the Jenolan Karst Conservation Reserve. This is a walk for those who want to feel the raw pulse of the Australian bush — expect steep climbs, river crossings, and nights under a canopy of stars.
Highlights & What to See
- Start at the Explorers Tree — Katoomba's historic landmark marks the beginning of the track and pays homage to the early European explorers of the region.
- Megalong Valley views — Early on, the trail offers sweeping vistas across the wild Megalong Valley, with its sandstone cliffs and patchwork of farmland.
- Coxs River crossing — A refreshing (and sometimes thigh-deep) ford that signals the halfway point and a chance to spot platypus at dawn or dusk.
- Jenolan Caves — The grand finale: explore the ancient limestone cave systems, including the Lucas Cave with its enormous chambers, or the more intimate River Cave.
- Wildlife encounters — Keep an eye out for lyrebirds, wallabies, and the occasional wombat, especially in the quieter sections near the river.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most walkers tackle the Six Foot Track over three days and two nights, camping at the designated sites at Coxs River (night one) and Alum Creek (night two). This pace allows you to enjoy the scenery without rushing, with each day covering roughly 14–16 kilometres. Fit hikers can complete it in two days, but you'll miss the leisurely river swims and birdwatching. For a day trip, consider walking the final 8‑km section from the Jenolan Caves turn‑off to the caves themselves — it's steep but offers a taste of the track's grandeur.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
