Rising dramatically at the northern end of Port Macquarie's coastline, Point Cartwright is a wild headland where the Pacific Ocean meets the Hastings River. It's a place of raw beauty, with panoramic views that stretch from the lighthouse to the distant mountains, and a sense of isolation that belies its proximity to town. The headland is a favourite for whale watching (June–November) and sunrise photography, and the short walk to the summit rewards you with a 360-degree perspective of the coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Point Cartwright Lighthouse – A working lighthouse with a distinctive red-and-white tower; the short, steep climb to the base offers sweeping views of the coastline and hinterland.
- Whale-watching platform – During migration season, this is one of the best land-based spots to see humpbacks breaching and spy-hopping.
- Headland walking track – A 1.5 km loop trail that winds through coastal heath and past dramatic rock platforms; look for seabirds and lizards basking on the rocks.
- Surf break at the river mouth – A consistent right-hand point break (for experienced surfers) where the river meets the sea; great to watch even if you don't paddle out.
- Picnic area with barbecue facilities – Sheltered tables near the car park make a perfect spot for a seaside lunch with a view.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1–2 hours to walk the headland loop, take photos, and enjoy the views. If you're whale watching, plan for at least 45 minutes of scanning the horizon – bring binoculars. Combine with a visit to nearby Shelly Beach or Town Beach for a half-day coastal outing.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Shelly Beach – A sheltered cove with calm waters, ideal for swimming and snorkelling, just a short drive south.
- Town Beach – Port Macquarie's main surf beach, with a patrolled area and the iconic breakwall covered in painted rocks.
- Port Macquarie Coastal Walk – A stunning 9 km walk linking several beaches and headlands; Point Cartwright is the northernmost highlight.
- Koala Hospital – A world-famous wildlife rescue centre where you can see koalas in care; about 10 minutes by car.
- Sea Acres Rainforest Centre – A boardwalk through coastal rainforest with a canopy walk and Indigenous cultural tours; 15 minutes south.
