North Brother Walk is a challenging but rewarding bushwalk that ascends to the summit of North Brother Mountain in Dooragan National Park, near Port Macquarie. The trail offers sweeping coastal views, lush rainforest, and a sense of remote wilderness just a short drive from town. It's a must for hikers seeking a half-day adventure with a big payoff.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit Lookout: The main reward – panoramic views of the Camden Haven River, Crowdy Bay National Park, and the Pacific Ocean stretching to the horizon.
- Rainforest Sections: The walk passes through subtropical rainforest with towering palms, tree ferns, and giant figs, offering shade and birdlife.
- Granite Boulders and Rock Formations: Near the top, massive granite outcrops provide natural viewpoints and photo opportunities.
- Wildflowers: In spring, the understorey bursts with native blooms like flannel flowers and waratahs.
- Picnic at the Base: The car park area has picnic tables and a grassy spot to rest before or after the walk.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least 3–4 hours for the return hike, which is about 5.5 km (3.4 miles) with a steep 400-metre elevation gain. The track is well-defined but rough in sections, so allow extra time for breaks, photos, and enjoying the summit. Start early in the morning to avoid the heat and afternoon sea breezes, and bring plenty of water and sturdy shoes.
