Muttonbird Island
Rising like a green whaleback just off the coast of Coffs Harbour, Muttonbird Island is a nature reserve and a vital seabird nesting site. Connected to the mainland by a short breakwater, this rocky island offers stunning coastal views and a rare chance to witness the life cycle of the wedge-tailed shearwater (muttonbird). From October to April, thousands of these birds return to their burrows at dusk — a spectacular natural show that draws birdwatchers and nature lovers alike. The island is also culturally significant to the local Gumbaynggirr people, and a short walking track leads you around its perimeter with interpretive signs explaining the area's ecology and history.
