Rising dramatically from the Central Tablelands, Mount Canobolas is an ancient volcanic peak that offers sweeping views, cool-climate vineyards, and excellent walking trails. This dormant volcano, the highest point in the region at 1,395 metres, is a haven for nature lovers and a perfect day trip from Orange or Bathurst.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit Walking Track: A rewarding 2.2 km return hike through subalpine forest to the rocky summit, where panoramic views stretch from the Blue Mountains to the Snowy Mountains on clear days.
- Mount Canobolas State Conservation Area: Explore diverse ecosystems, including rare montane bogs and snow gums, with several short walks like the 1.5 km Federal Falls loop.
- Cool-Climate Wineries: The slopes of Mount Canobolas are home to some of NSW's best cool-climate vineyards, including Canobolas-Smith and Bloodwood Estate, known for exceptional riesling and pinot noir.
- Pinnacle Lookout: A short drive from the summit, this lookout offers a different perspective over the surrounding valleys and is a prime spot for sunset photography.
- Wildflowers & Birdlife: Spring brings a carpet of wildflowers, while birdwatchers can spot wedge-tailed eagles, crimson rosellas, and the elusive superb lyrebird.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is enough to enjoy the summit walk and a wine tasting or two, but allocate a full day if you want to combine several walks, visit multiple cellar doors, and soak up the views. Start early to catch the morning light and avoid afternoon clouds that can obscure the panorama. The mountain is also a great stop on a longer drive from Orange to the Central West.
