Each summer, the sandy shores of Mon Repos Conservation Park become the stage for one of Australia's most extraordinary natural events: the nesting and hatching of loggerhead, green, and flatback turtles. Located just 15 minutes from Bundaberg, this protected beach is the most significant turtle rookery on the Australian mainland. The guided night tours, run by Queensland Parks and Wildlife, offer a rare, respectful front-row seat to turtles laying eggs or tiny hatchlings scrambling toward the moonlit sea. It's a humbling, awe-inspiring encounter that stays with you long after the sand is washed from your shoes.
Highlights & What to See
- Guided Turtle Tours – From November to March, ranger-led evening walks take small groups to witness nesting turtles or hatchling releases. The commentary is informative and the experience is carefully managed to minimise disturbance.
- Mon Repos Turtle Centre – This modern interpretive centre uses interactive displays and live cameras to explain the turtles' life cycle, migration, and conservation challenges. It's open during the day and well worth a visit even if you can't join a night tour.
- Beach at Dawn – If you miss the night tours, early morning walks often reveal tracks and nests. The beach itself is a beautiful, unspoiled stretch of coast.
- Bundaberg Rum Distillery – Pair your wildlife encounter with a tour of the iconic distillery in nearby Bundaberg, where you can sample Australia's favourite rum.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for a full evening: arrive at the Turtle Centre by late afternoon to explore the exhibits, then join the night tour (typically 2–3 hours). Turtle movements are unpredictable, so patience is key. If you're self-driving, consider staying overnight in Bundaberg or Bargara to avoid a late drive back. For a deeper dive, spend a couple of days in the area to also explore the nearby islands and national parks.
