Mon Repos Turtle Encounter

Each summer, the sandy shores of Mon Repos Conservation Park become the stage for one of Australia's most extraordinary natural events: the nesting and hatching of loggerhead, green, and flatback turtles. Located just 15 minutes from Bundaberg, this protected beach is the most significant turtle rookery on the Australian mainland. The guided night tours, run by Queensland Parks and Wildlife, offer a rare, respectful front-row seat to turtles laying eggs or tiny hatchlings scrambling toward the moonlit sea. It's a humbling, awe-inspiring encounter that stays with you long after the sand is washed from your shoes.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for a full evening: arrive at the Turtle Centre by late afternoon to explore the exhibits, then join the night tour (typically 2–3 hours). Turtle movements are unpredictable, so patience is key. If you're self-driving, consider staying overnight in Bundaberg or Bargara to avoid a late drive back. For a deeper dive, spend a couple of days in the area to also explore the nearby islands and national parks.
