Mayfield Garden is a sprawling cool-climate garden nestled in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales, roughly 2.5 hours west of Sydney. This privately owned wonderland spans 65 hectares of themed gardens, including a spectacular water garden, a Japanese-inspired section, and a vast maze of hedges. It’s a place where art meets horticulture, with sculptures and follies tucked among the blooms. The on-site café serves excellent coffee and seasonal fare, making it easy to while away a whole day meandering the paths.
Highlights & What to See
- Water Garden – A series of cascading ponds, fountains and a dramatic lake that reflects the surrounding willows; particularly magical in autumn.
- The Maze – A large, hedge-walled labyrinth that’s fun for all ages; the central lookout offers a great vantage point.
- Japanese Garden – A serene space with a traditional tea house, koi ponds and sculpted pines, perfect for quiet contemplation.
- Blue Spruce Avenue – A majestic allée of blue Colorado spruces that creates a striking tunnel effect.
- Harvest Café & Cellar Door – Stop for wood-fired pizzas, local wines and a garden-fresh menu; the homemade scones are a standout.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate at least three to four hours to explore the main garden loops at a leisurely pace. If you want to walk every trail, including the outer woodland paths, plan for a full day. The garden is best visited in spring (for tulips and rhododendrons) or autumn (when the maples and oaks turn fiery). Arrive early to beat the crowds, especially on weekends and during school holidays.
