Just a short drive from Port Macquarie, the Gwydir Wetlands offer a serene escape into a world of waterbirds, paperbarks, and reflective lagoons. This hidden gem is a haven for birdwatchers, nature lovers, and anyone seeking a peaceful paddle or walk amidst lush wetlands. The boardwalks and kayak trails let you immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of this vital ecosystem, where spoonbills, egrets, and kingfishers are common sights.
Highlights & What to See
- Birdwatching paradise: Spot over 100 species, including black swans, white-faced herons, and the occasional jabiru. Bring binoculars for the best views from the elevated boardwalk.
- Kayak or canoe the lagoons: Paddle through narrow channels fringed with paperbark trees and water lilies. The still waters offer a mirror-like reflection of the sky and surrounding bush.
- Walking trails and boardwalks: The easy 2km loop trail takes you through swamp oak forest and over wetlands, with interpretive signs explaining the ecology and Indigenous uses of the area.
- Sunset photography: The wetlands glow gold at dusk, with birds returning to roost and the water turning a deep amber. A tripod is recommended for long exposures.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least 2–3 hours to fully appreciate the wetlands. If you’re keen on kayaking, plan for a half-day, including time to launch, paddle, and relax on the water. The site is best visited early morning or late afternoon for optimal bird activity and softer light. Combine with a picnic lunch at one of the shaded tables near the car park.
