Perched on the headland between Town Beach and Oxley Beach, Glass House Lookout offers one of Port Macquarie’s most rewarding coastal panoramas. The lookout takes its name from the original 19th-century ‘glass house’ (a lighthouse keeper’s cottage with a glass-walled lantern room), and today it’s the perfect spot to watch whales migrating between June and November, or simply soak up the endless blue horizon. The short, easy walk from the car park makes it accessible for all ages, and the viewing platform is a favourite for sunrise photography.
Highlights & What to See
- Whale-watching platform – from June to November, humpbacks and southern right whales pass close to shore; bring binoculars for the best views.
- Coastal panorama – the lookout commands sweeping views from Tacking Point Lighthouse south to North Brother Mountain; on clear days you can see the distant outline of the Camden Haven.
- Interpretive signage – learn about the site’s maritime history, including the original glass house and the shipwrecks that inspired its construction.
- Sunrise photography – the platform faces east, making it a prime spot for golden-hour shots over the Pacific.
- Easy coastal walk – combine the lookout with the short path to Tacking Point Lighthouse (1 km south) for a scenic stroll along the clifftops.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 15–30 minutes at the lookout itself – enough time to read the signs, scan for whales, and snap a few photos. If you’re combining it with the walk to Tacking Point Lighthouse, budget a leisurely 45 minutes to an hour round trip. Sunrise visits are quick but rewarding; sunset visits can be shorter as the light fades quickly. The lookout is a perfect quick stop on a self-drive of Port Macquarie’s coastal highlights.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Tacking Point Lighthouse – a 10-minute walk south along the clifftop path; Australia’s third-oldest lighthouse still in operation, with more whale-watching opportunities.
- Port Macquarie Town Beach – a patrolled swimming beach with a long surf break, just a few minutes’ drive north.
- Koala Hospital – a world-famous wildlife hospital and sanctuary, 5 minutes by car, where you can see rescued koalas in their natural habitat.
- Sea Acres Rainforest Centre – a boardwalk through a coastal rainforest with guided tours, 10 minutes south of the lookout.
- Port Macquarie Historic Courthouse – a beautifully restored 19th-century building with a museum, 5 minutes north in the town centre.
