Gaagal Wanggaan South Beach National Park
Gaagal Wanggaan (South Beach National Park) is a wild and windswept coastal reserve just south of Port Macquarie, where the Pacific Ocean meets pristine dune systems and lush coastal heath. The park's dual name honours the traditional Birpai custodians – 'Gaagal Wanggaan' means 'salt water country' – and the landscape feels ancient and untamed. This is a place for solitary walks, birdwatching, and connecting with the raw power of the ocean.
Highlights & What to See
- South Beach – A vast, unpatrolled beach ideal for long walks, surf fishing, and watching dramatic waves crash against the shore. Keep an eye out for migrating whales from June to November.
- Gaagal Wanggaan Walk – A 4.5 km loop trail that meanders through coastal heath, paperbark wetlands, and over dunes, with interpretive signs sharing Birpai stories and ecological insights.
- Birdwatching – The park is a haven for shorebirds, including pied oystercatchers, beach stone-curlews, and the threatened little tern. Bring binoculars for the best sightings.
- Lake Innes Nature Reserve – Adjacent to the park, this reserve offers a tranquil lake setting with picnic tables and a short walking track – perfect for a quiet afternoon.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ample to explore the main walking track and soak up the beach atmosphere. If you're keen on birdwatching or a longer beach stroll, plan for 3–4 hours. The park is also a lovely spot for a sunset picnic, so you could easily stretch an afternoon into the early evening. There are no camping facilities, so it's best as a day trip from Port Macquarie.
