Port Macquarie, where the Hastings River meets the Pacific, is one of Australia’s most reliable spots for dolphin watching. The resident bottlenose dolphins are so accustomed to boats that they often bow-ride and leap alongside, making every tour a memorable encounter. Beyond the dolphins, you’ll also spot sea eagles, pelicans, and, in season, migrating humpback whales. The town’s laid-back harbour and coastal walks add to the appeal, making dolphin watching a must-do on any Mid North Coast itinerary.
Highlights & What to See
- Dolphin Cruise on the Hastings River – The best way to see pods of bottlenose dolphins in their natural habitat. Most tours depart from the Town Wharf and glide through calm waters, with dolphins often approaching the boat.
- Breakwall & Town Beach – Walk the breakwall from the marina to Town Beach; early mornings and late afternoons offer excellent shore-based dolphin sightings as they feed near the mouth of the river.
- Sea Acres Rainforest Centre – Combine your dolphin tour with a boardwalk through coastal rainforest; you might see eastern water dragons and crimson rosellas.
- Koala Hospital – A short drive away, this world-famous rehabilitation centre lets you see koalas up close and learn about conservation efforts.
- Whale Watching (May–November) – If visiting during migration season, many dolphin cruises double as whale-watching tours, giving you two marine marvels for the price of one.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most dolphin-watching cruises run 1.5 to 2 hours, which is enough for a satisfying encounter. Plan a half-day in Port Macquarie to combine the cruise with a walk along the breakwall and a visit to the Koala Hospital. If you have a full day, add a trip to Sea Acres or a drive to the nearby Ellenborough Falls. For self-drive travellers, morning tours are best—calmer seas and active dolphins—leaving the afternoon free for exploring the town’s café-lined main street.
