Diamond Head is a ruggedly beautiful headland jutting into the Tasman Sea, part of the Crowdy Bay National Park on the Mid North Coast of NSW. It's a place where dramatic coastal cliffs, ancient paperbark forests, and pristine beaches converge, offering a raw, uncrowded escape. The area is rich in Indigenous heritage and was a favourite retreat of Australian writer Kylie Tennant, adding a layer of literary history to the wild landscape.
Highlights & What to See
- Diamond Head Loop Walk: A 5.6 km circuit that takes you through coastal heath, past the historic Kylie Tennant Hut, and along clifftops with breathtaking ocean views. Keep an eye out for whales during migration season (June–November).
- Indian Head Lookout: A short climb from the car park rewards you with panoramic vistas of the coastline and the chance to spot dolphins surfing the waves below.
- Diamond Beach: A vast, unpatrolled beach perfect for long walks, fishing, and surfing. The southern end is popular for its rock pools and solitude.
- Crowdy Bay National Park: Explore the park's diverse habitats, including coastal rainforest and paperbark swamps. The park is a haven for birdwatchers, with species like the superb fairy-wren and white-bellied sea eagle.
- Kylie Tennant Hut: A simple, historic shack that once housed the novelist; it's a poignant spot for literature buffs and a reminder of the area's bohemian past.
Suggested Time to Spend
Diamond Head is best enjoyed over a full day or as an overnight stop. Arrive early to tackle the loop walk in the cool of the morning, then spend the afternoon swimming or fishing at Diamond Beach. If you're camping, stay a night at the nearby Diamond Head Campground to experience the starry skies and the sound of the surf. For a quick visit, allow at least 3–4 hours to complete the main walk and take in the lookout.
