Co Along Beach is a serene stretch of golden sand on the northern outskirts of Port Macquarie, offering a peaceful escape from the more crowded central beaches. With its gentle waves and uncrowded shores, it's a favourite among locals for a quiet swim, a leisurely stroll, or simply soaking up the coastal atmosphere. The beach is backed by low dunes and coastal scrub, giving it a wild, natural feel that invites you to unwind and connect with the NSW North Coast's laid-back rhythm.
Highlights & What to See
- Swimming and Surfing: The beach is patrolled in season, and the waves are generally gentle, making it ideal for beginner surfers and families. Always swim between the flags.
- Coastal Walk: Follow the track north from the beach to reach the rocky headland at Tacking Point, where you'll find the historic Tacking Point Lighthouse – one of the oldest surviving lighthouses in NSW, built in 1879. The walk offers panoramic ocean views and is excellent for whale watching (May–November).
- Picnicking and Relaxation: The beach has a grassy reserve with picnic tables and barbecues, perfect for a relaxed afternoon. The lack of development means you can enjoy the sound of the waves without the buzz of a commercial strip.
- Dog-Friendly Area: A designated off-leash area allows dogs to run free on the southern end of the beach, making it a hit with pet owners.
- Sunrise and Sunset: The beach faces east, so sunrise is spectacular. For sunset, head to the nearby headland or Lighthouse Beach.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours here for a swim and a walk, but you could easily linger for half a day if you combine it with a picnic, a coastal stroll to the lighthouse, and some relaxed beach time. It's a perfect spot to break up a day of exploring the Port Macquarie region.
