Perched on the easternmost point of mainland Australia, Cape Byron Lighthouse is a dazzling white beacon that has guided ships since 1901. The lighthouse crowns a headland of dramatic cliffs and swirling seas, offering panoramic views from the Byron Bay hinterland to the Pacific horizon. The short but steep walk to the lighthouse is a rite of passage for visitors, rewarding you with whale sightings (June–November), pods of dolphins, and the chance to spot sea eagles riding the thermals. The keeper's cottages now house a small museum and a café, making this a perfect spot to absorb the coastal magic.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allocate at least 2–3 hours for the full experience: a 1-hour walk from Byron Bay to the lighthouse, 30 minutes exploring the lighthouse and museum, and another hour to relax at Wategos Beach or grab a coffee at the lighthouse café. If you're keen on a guided tour or want to linger for sunset, budget a half-day. The walk is doable in sneakers, but wear sturdy shoes for the steep sections.
