Nestled in the lush Gold Coast hinterland, Canungra is a sleepy country town that punches well above its weight for nature lovers and history buffs. Surrounded by subtropical rainforest and World Heritage-listed national parks, this former timber-milling hub offers a genuine escape into Queensland’s wild heart, with a dash of military history thrown in.
Highlights & What to See
- Lamington National Park – A short drive from town, this UNESCO World Heritage site boasts spectacular walking trails, ancient Antarctic beech trees, and abundant birdlife. The Tree Top Walk at O’Reilly’s is a must.
- Canungra Military Museum – Housed in a historic army base, this museum tells the story of the Jungle Training Centre and features vehicles, weapons and memorabilia from WWII to modern peacekeeping.
- Canungra Valley Vineyards – Set on the banks of Canungra Creek, this boutique winery offers tastings of cool-climate wines, a rustic cellar door, and lovely picnic grounds.
- Tamborine Mountain – Just north, this plateau is dotted with art galleries, craft shops, and walking tracks leading to waterfalls and lookouts.
- Kooroomba Vineyards & Lavender Farm – A scenic drive away, this property combines wine tastings with lavender fields and sweeping views of the Scenic Rim.
Suggested Time to Spend
Canungra itself is compact, but the surrounding attractions deserve at least two full days. Spend one day exploring Lamington National Park’s walks and O’Reilly’s, and another visiting the military museum, a winery, and Tamborine Mountain. If you’re short on time, a day trip from the Gold Coast or Brisbane is feasible, but you’ll only scratch the surface.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Gold Coast – The beaches and theme parks of Surfers Paradise are about 45 minutes east, making Canungra a perfect hinterland escape after the coast.
- Mount Tamborine – Famous for its gallery walk, glow-worm caves, and mountain views, it’s a natural pairing with Canungra.
- Beechmont – A quiet hamlet with access to Binna Burra section of Lamington National Park, plus the dramatic Numinbah Valley.
- Springbrook National Park – Another World Heritage area with waterfalls, ancient forests, and the Natural Bridge glow-worm cave.
- Scenic Rim Trail – For serious hikers, this multi-day trail connects Lamington, Mount Barney and Main Range national parks.
