Just west of Port Macquarie, Bungendore Nature Reserve is a quiet pocket of coastal heath and dry eucalypt forest that rewards walkers with sweeping views over the Hastings River valley and distant mountains. This lesser-known reserve feels a world away from the beach crowds, offering a genuine bushland escape where birdlife and wildflowers take centre stage.
Highlights & What to See
- Bungendore Summit Walk: A steady 3 km return climb through scribbly gums and banksias, ending at a lookout with panoramic views across the valley to the ocean on clear days.
- Wildflower displays: From late winter to spring, the heathland erupts in colour with flannel flowers, boronia, and orchids — a photographer's delight.
- Birdwatching: Keep an eye out for eastern yellow robins, scarlet honeyeaters, and wedge-tailed eagles soaring overhead.
- Peaceful picnic spots: A small clearing near the trailhead offers a shady spot for a picnic among the sounds of cicadas and bellbirds.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ample. Start early to catch the morning light and cooler temperatures; the summit walk takes about 1.5–2 hours at a leisurely pace, leaving time for a picnic and birdwatching. Combine with a morning at the reserve and an afternoon exploring Port Macquarie's coastal walks or historic sites.
