Billbary National Park
Billbary National Park is a wild and beautiful pocket of coastal rainforest, heathland, and dramatic sea cliffs on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, just south of Port Macquarie. This park feels wonderfully off the beaten track, with a network of walking trails that lead to hidden beaches, panoramic lookouts, and quiet picnic spots. It's a paradise for nature lovers and hikers, offering solitude and a sense of discovery that's rare so close to a popular holiday town.
Highlights & What to See
- Walk to Billbary Beach – A short but steep track descends through coastal scrub to a pristine, often empty beach. The contrast of the turquoise water against the dark volcanic rocks is stunning.
- The Headland Lookout – A gentle walk rewards you with sweeping views of the coastline, from Point Perpendicular to the distant peaks of the Great Dividing Range on clear days.
- Coastal Heathland – In spring and early summer, the heath bursts into colour with wildflowers, including flannel flowers, boronia, and banksia. Keep an eye out for honeyeaters and crimson rosellas.
- Picnic at the Billbary Creek – There's a grassy picnic area near the creek mouth, perfect for a relaxed lunch with the sound of waves in the background.
- Whale Watching – During migration season (June–November), the headland offers excellent vantage points for spotting humpback whales passing close to shore.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ideal to experience Billbary National Park. Start with the headland walk (about 45 minutes return), then descend to the beach for a swim or a long walk along the sand. Pack a picnic to enjoy at the creek or a lookout. If you have more time, combine it with a visit to the nearby Sea Acres Rainforest Centre or a drive along the coastal road to Crescent Head. The park is compact, so you can easily pace it in 3–4 hours without feeling rushed.
