Jenolan Caves
Deep within the limestone karst of the Blue Mountains, Jenolan Caves is Australia’s most spectacular cave system – a subterranean wonderland of glittering crystal formations, underground rivers and vast cathedral-like chambers. The caves have been drawing visitors for over a century, and the experience remains as awe-inspiring as ever. With guided tours through several distinct caves (each with its own character), plus bushwalks, a historic hotel and a palpable sense of ancient mystery, Jenolan is an essential stop on any New South Wales road trip.
Highlights & What to See
- The Lucas Cave – the most popular cave, famous for its enormous Cathedral Chamber and the Bone Cave, where fossils of extinct megafauna were found. The 1.5-hour tour is a must.
- The Imperial Cave – a drier cave known for its delicate shawl formations and the spectacular 'Angel's Wing' calcite flowstone. A shorter, less strenuous tour.
- The Orient Cave – renowned for its vibrant colours, caused by mineral impurities in the formations. The 'Pool of Reflections' is a photographer’s dream.
- The River Cave – the deepest cave open to the public, featuring an underground river and the 'Grand Archway', a massive natural tunnel that forms the cave complex’s entrance.
- Jenolan Caves House – a heritage-listed hotel built in 1897, offering accommodation, a restaurant and a glimpse of the area’s Victorian-era tourism history.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate at least a full day to explore Jenolan Caves properly. Most visitors arrive mid-morning, take two guided cave tours (each lasting 1–1.5 hours), enjoy lunch at the Caves House, and then walk the short bush trails around the complex. If you’re keen to see three or four caves, consider staying overnight at the historic hotel – this also allows you to experience the caves without the daytime crowds. A self-drive from Sydney takes about 2.5 hours, so you can easily do it as a long day trip, but an overnight stay is far more immersive.
