Stretching north from the better-known Lower Hunter wine region, the Upper Hunter Valley is a quieter, more rugged slice of New South Wales wine country. Here, the vine-striped plains give way to rolling hills and the distant blue of the Great Dividing Range. It’s a region for travellers who want to trade crowds for wide-open spaces, with a handful of exceptional wineries, historic towns, and a palpable sense of rural authenticity. The pace is slower, the air is cleaner, and the Shiraz – particularly from the volcanic soils around Denman – is world-class.
Highlights & What to See
- Wine tasting in Denman and around: Visit cellar doors such as Petersons Wines (one of the oldest family-run wineries in the valley) and Mount Pleasant Wines, known for its elegant Semillon and Shiraz. Many offer relaxed, informative tastings without the weekend bustle.
- Muswellbrook: This historic coal-mining and farming town has a lovely main street with cafes, antique shops, and the Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre. The nearby Lake Liddell Recreation Area is a peaceful spot for a picnic or a short walk.
- Merriwa: A classic country town with a wide, tree-lined main street. Stop at Merriwa Artisans for local crafts and produce, and visit the Merriwa Historical Society Museum for a glimpse into the region’s pioneering past.
- Wollemi National Park: The northern edge of this vast wilderness area touches the Upper Hunter. Explore the dramatic sandstone escarpments, deep gorges, and ancient Wollemi pines on a day-walk or 4WD adventure from the Putty Road.
- Manning River headwaters: For a scenic drive, follow the winding roads towards the headwaters of the Manning River, where you’ll find pockets of rainforest and charming villages like Ellerston.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days is ideal to explore the Upper Hunter at a relaxed pace. Spend the first day tasting wines around Denman and exploring Muswellbrook, then use the second day to venture further north to Merriwa or east into the Wollemi National Park foothills. If you’re a keen hiker or angler, add an extra day for the national park or the Manning River area. The region works well as a two-night stop on a longer New South Wales road trip between Sydney and the New England region.
