Upper Hunter Valley

Stretching north from the better-known Lower Hunter wine region, the Upper Hunter Valley is a quieter, more rugged slice of New South Wales wine country. Here, the vine-striped plains give way to rolling hills and the distant blue of the Great Dividing Range. It’s a region for travellers who want to trade crowds for wide-open spaces, with a handful of exceptional wineries, historic towns, and a palpable sense of rural authenticity. The pace is slower, the air is cleaner, and the Shiraz – particularly from the volcanic soils around Denman – is world-class.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Two to three days is ideal to explore the Upper Hunter at a relaxed pace. Spend the first day tasting wines around Denman and exploring Muswellbrook, then use the second day to venture further north to Merriwa or east into the Wollemi National Park foothills. If you’re a keen hiker or angler, add an extra day for the national park or the Manning River area. The region works well as a two-night stop on a longer New South Wales road trip between Sydney and the New England region.
