The Tumut River carves a cool, green corridor through the high country of northern Kosciuszko National Park, offering some of the best trout fishing in NSW and a string of crystalline swimming holes that are pure magic on a summer’s day. This is a place where the bush feels ancient – tall snow gums lean over the water, platypuses surface at dusk, and the air smells of eucalyptus and clean granite. Whether you’re casting a fly rod, paddling a kayak, or simply soaking in a rock pool, the Tumut River feels a world away from the coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Fly-fishing on the Tumut River – The river is legendary for wild brown and rainbow trout; the best stretches are around the township of Cabramurra and below Blowering Reservoir. Even non-anglers will appreciate the serene beauty of the riffles and pools.
- Swimming at Paddy’s River Falls – A short walk leads to a series of granite shelves and deep, clear plunge pools – perfect for a refreshing dip surrounded by bushland.
- Yarrangobilly Caves – Just a short drive away, these limestone caves feature stunning formations and a natural thermal pool where you can soak year-round.
- Blowering Dam – A vast reservoir popular for waterskiing, sailing and fishing; the drive across the dam wall offers dramatic views down the valley.
- Scenic drives along the Snowy Mountains Highway – The winding road from Tumut to Kiandra passes through alpine meadows and historic goldrush sites, with frequent lookouts over the river gorge.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least a full day to experience the river properly – half a day for fishing or swimming, plus time for a cave visit and a drive to a lookout. If you’re an avid angler or hiker, two days gives you the chance to explore multiple stretches of river and tackle the longer walks in Kosciuszko National Park. The area is best visited from November to April when the water is warm enough for swimming and the alpine wildflowers are out.
