Tumut River

The Tumut River carves a cool, green corridor through the high country of northern Kosciuszko National Park, offering some of the best trout fishing in NSW and a string of crystalline swimming holes that are pure magic on a summer’s day. This is a place where the bush feels ancient – tall snow gums lean over the water, platypuses surface at dusk, and the air smells of eucalyptus and clean granite. Whether you’re casting a fly rod, paddling a kayak, or simply soaking in a rock pool, the Tumut River feels a world away from the coast.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow at least a full day to experience the river properly – half a day for fishing or swimming, plus time for a cave visit and a drive to a lookout. If you’re an avid angler or hiker, two days gives you the chance to explore multiple stretches of river and tackle the longer walks in Kosciuszko National Park. The area is best visited from November to April when the water is warm enough for swimming and the alpine wildflowers are out.
