Stretching for seven golden kilometres between Broken Head and Cape Byron, Tallow Beach is the wild, untamed sibling of Byron Bay’s more famous main beach. This is where you come for a proper coastal walk, a dawn surf without the crowds, or simply to feel the salt spray on your face as the Pacific rollers crash onto the shore. Backed by the lush wallum heath of Arakwal National Park, Tallow Beach feels a world away from the Byron bustle, yet it’s only a short drive from town.
Highlights & What to See
- Cape Byron Walking Track: This spectacular coastal trail runs the length of Tallow Beach, linking Broken Head to Cape Byron Lighthouse. Allow two hours one way for sweeping views, whale-watching (June–November) and the chance to spot sea eagles.
- Surfing & Bodyboarding: Tallow Beach picks up more swell than Byron’s main beach, offering consistent waves for intermediate surfers. The southern end near Cosy Corner is popular, but always check for rips.
- Arakwal National Park: The beach is fringed by this small but significant park, co-managed with the local Arakwal Bundjalung people. Walk the paperbark swamp boardwalk or picnic among the banksias.
- Sunrise at The Pass: While technically at the northern end of Tallow Beach, The Pass is one of Australia’s most famous point breaks and a magical spot to watch the sun rise over the Pacific.
- Dolphin & Whale Spotting: Tallow Beach is a prime spot for marine life. Pods of bottlenose dolphins are almost guaranteed, and humpback whales pass close to shore during migration.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give Tallow Beach at least half a day to truly appreciate its scale. Most visitors combine a morning walk along the Cape Byron Track (2–3 hours) with a few hours of swimming or sunbaking. If you’re a keen surfer, you could easily spend a full day moving between breaks. The beach is patrolled only in summer, so swim between the flags then; outside summer, exercise caution.
