Sea Lake, a tiny outback town in Victoria's Mallee region, is the gateway to one of Australia's most otherworldly natural wonders: Lake Tyrrell. This vast salt lake, covering over 20,000 hectares, offers a surreal landscape of shimmering white crystals and mirror-like reflections that make it a photographer's paradise. The town itself is a friendly, laid-back spot with a population of around 600, perfect for a stopover on a self-drive itinerary through northwestern Victoria.
Highlights & What to See
- Lake Tyrrell – The star attraction: a massive salt lake that creates incredible mirror effects, especially at sunrise and sunset. Walk out onto the crusty salt flats (wear sturdy shoes) and watch the sky reflect perfectly on the shallow water.
- Lake Tyrrell Viewing Platform – A purpose-built boardwalk and platform near the Sea Lake township, offering elevated views over the lake and a great spot for photos without disturbing the salt crust.
- Stargazing – With minimal light pollution, Lake Tyrrell is a Dark Sky Sanctuary. The Milky Way is often visible to the naked eye, and the salt flats add a surreal foreground for astrophotography.
- Sea Lake Silo Art – The town's grain silos have been painted with a stunning mural of a local bird (the brolga) and a starry night sky, part of the Australian Silo Art Trail.
- Mallee Birding – The area around Sea Lake is home to many bird species, including the majestic brolga, pink-eared ducks, and red-necked avocets, best seen at the nearby Lake Tyrrell Wildlife Reserve.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors come for a day trip from Mildura (1.5 hours north) or Swan Hill (1 hour east), but staying overnight allows you to experience both sunset and sunrise at Lake Tyrrell – the two most magical times. A two-night stay gives you time to explore the lake at leisure, visit the silo art, and enjoy the quiet outback atmosphere. If you're passing through on a self-drive tour, allow at least 3–4 hours for a quick visit to the viewing platform and a walk on the lake.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Mildura – A lively Murray River town with wineries, paddle steamers, and citrus orchards, about 1.5 hours north.
- Swan Hill – Known for its Pioneer Settlement open-air museum and riverfront, an hour east.
- Wyperfeld National Park – A vast mallee wilderness with hiking trails, kangaroos, and wildflowers, 45 minutes south-west.
- Hattah-Kulkyne National Park – A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with river red gums, birdlife, and camping, 1 hour north-west.
- Ouyen – A small town with its own silo art and the famous 'Sunset Strip' of red gum trees, 30 minutes north.
