Scotts Head is a sleepy coastal hamlet on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, where the lush green hills of the hinterland tumble into the Tasman Sea. This is a place for barefoot walks on uncrowded beaches, watching dolphins ride the swell, and soaking up the kind of quiet seaside atmosphere that has all but vanished from more developed resort towns. The main draw is the magnificent Scotts Head Beach, a long, arc of golden sand that is patrolled in season and offers excellent swimming, surfing, and fishing. The village itself is tiny – a handful of streets, a general store, and a pub – but that's precisely its charm.
Highlights & What to See
- Scotts Head Beach: A stunning, patrolled beach that stretches for kilometres. The southern end is popular for surfing, while the northern end offers calmer waters for swimming and paddleboarding.
- Scotts Head Headland: Walk to the top for panoramic views of the coastline, from Smoky Cape to the north and down to South West Rocks. It's a prime whale-watching spot from June to November.
- Gaagal Wanggaan (South Beach) National Park: Just south of town, this Aboriginal-owned national park protects coastal heath and offers walking trails, secluded beaches, and a chance to connect with the local Gumbaynggirr culture.
- Fishing: The beach, headland, and nearby creek are all excellent for fishing. Drop a line in for bream, flathead, and whiting.
- Scotts Head Pub: The local watering hole serves cold beer, hearty pub meals, and has a friendly, unpretentious vibe. It's the social hub of the village.
Suggested Time to Spend

With two days, you can explore the headland, tackle a walk in Gaagal Wanggaan National Park, and have plenty of time to simply relax on the sand. It's also a great base for a longer stay if you want to combine it with nearby attractions like the Nambucca River or the historic town of Macksville.
