Outback NSW is the kind of place that rewires your sense of scale. Endless red plains, ancient rock formations, and a sky so vast it feels like a second landscape. This is Australia’s interior at its most raw and poetic, where the roads are long, the towns are few, and the stories – from Indigenous Dreamtime to bushranger legends – run as deep as the gorges. For travellers who crave solitude, starry nights, and the thrill of the open road, this is a pilgrimage worth making.
Highlights & What to See
- Mungo National Park – Walk the Walls of China, a lunar-like dune system where 40,000-year-old human footprints were preserved. The guided sunset tour is unforgettable.
- Broken Hill – Australia’s oldest mining town, now an artists’ enclave. Visit the Living Desert sculptures at sunrise and the Pro Hart Gallery for outback kitsch meets fine art.
- Mutawintji National Park – A sacred site for the Barkindji people, with stunning gorges, rock art galleries, and natural waterholes perfect for a cooling dip.
- White Cliffs – Stay in an underground dugout motel; the opal-mining town is literally burrowed into the earth. The solar-powered artesian bore baths are a bonus.
- Menindee Lakes – A surprising oasis system that attracts birdlife and offers serene kayaking and fishing, especially after wet years.
Suggested Time to Spend
You’ll need at least 4–5 days to do the outback justice, ideally a week. The distances are deceptive: Broken Hill is about 13 hours from Sydney, so plan for two days of driving each way. Base yourself in Broken Hill for 3 nights, using it as a hub for day trips to Mungo (allow a full day) and Mutawintji (half-day). Add an overnight in White Cliffs to break up the journey. If you’re coming from the Hunter Valley, make it a 10-day loop via the Darling River Run or the Kidman Way.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Silverton – The ghost town that starred in Mad Max 2; grab a beer at the Silverton Hotel and feel the post-apocalyptic vibe.
- Milparinka & Tibooburra – Deep outback outposts near the Corner Country, with the historic Albert Hotel and striking granite tors.
- Kinchega National Park – Adjacent to Menindee, this park offers historic woolshed ruins and river red gum forests along the Darling River.
- Bourke – The ‘Gateway to the Outback’, with a paddle steamer cruise on the Darling and the Back O’Bourke exhibition.
- Cobar – A mining town with a strong heritage, the Great Cobar Heritage Centre, and the scenic Mount Drysdale lookout.
- Wentworth – Where the Darling meets the Murray; explore the old lock and the Perry Sandhills.
