Perched on a rocky headland overlooking the sparkling waters of Port Stephens, Nelson Bay Lighthouse is a classic coastal beacon with panoramic views. Built in 1879, this charming whitewashed structure is a beloved landmark for locals and visitors alike. The short walk to the lighthouse rewards you with sweeping vistas of the bay, the distant sand dunes of Stockton Beach, and the chance to spot dolphins frolicking in the waves below. It’s a perfect spot for a sunset stroll or a picnic with a view.
Highlights & What to See
- Lighthouse & Grounds: The historic lighthouse itself is a photogenic beauty. While the interior is not open to the public, the surrounding lawns and lookout points are ideal for taking in the scenery.
- Coastal Walk: The easy 1.5 km return walk from Nelson Bay to the lighthouse meanders along the clifftop, passing secluded coves and offering constant ocean views. Keep an eye out for migrating whales between May and November.
- Dolphin Watching: Port Stephens is famous for its resident bottlenose dolphin population. From the lighthouse, you can often see them surfing the waves or playing in the bay. Several cruise operators depart from the marina below.
- Tomaree Head Summit: A short drive or a longer coastal walk away, this summit provides an even more dramatic 360-degree view of the bay and the Tasman Sea. It’s a must-do for hikers and photographers.
- Little Beach: Just below the lighthouse, this sheltered sandy cove is perfect for a swim or a kayak. It’s a quiet alternative to the main Nelson Bay beach.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least an hour for the walk to the lighthouse and time to soak up the views. If you combine it with the Tomaree Head Summit walk (about 2 hours return), plan for a half-day. Many visitors combine a morning at the lighthouse with a dolphin-watching cruise in the afternoon. The lighthouse is a great stop on a self-drive itinerary of the Hunter Valley and Port Stephens region.
