Stretching into the Southern Ocean like a rugged arm, the Eyre Peninsula is South Australia's wild, seafood-rich frontier. Here, dramatic limestone cliffs give way to blindingly white sand dunes, and the Great Australian Bight serves up some of the world's best oysters, tuna, and abalone. This is a place for road-trippers who crave solitude, epic coastal walks, and the chance to swim with sea lions or cage-dive with great white sharks. The pace is slow, the skies are vast, and the seafood is so fresh you'll be eating it straight off the boat.
Highlights & What to See
- Swim with sea lions & dolphins at Baird Bay – an unforgettable, ethical wildlife encounter in clear, sheltered waters.
- Coffin Bay National Park – explore pristine beaches, towering sand dunes, and the iconic 'Punish' rock formation.
- Port Lincoln – the seafood capital of Australia; take a tuna-fishing charter or visit the weekend produce market.
- Head of Bight – between June and October, watch southern right whales calve just metres from the clifftop boardwalk.
- Gawler Ranges National Park – ancient volcanic domes and granite outcrops, home to kangaroos, emus, and wedge-tailed eagles.
- Ceduna – gateway to the Nullarbor, with excellent Aboriginal art galleries and the chance to taste fresh King George whiting.
Suggested Time to Spend
To truly experience the Eyre Peninsula, allow at least five to seven days for a self-drive loop from Port Augusta or Adelaide. Spend two days around Port Lincoln and Coffin Bay, one day exploring the Gawler Ranges, and another two days heading west to Ceduna and the Head of Bight. If you're short on time, focus on the southern coast between Port Lincoln and Streaky Bay – this area packs the most dramatic scenery and wildlife encounters. The drive itself is part of the experience; take your time, pull over for photo stops, and stock up on supplies in the larger towns.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Flinders Ranges – a two-hour drive north of Port Augusta; combine with the Eyre Peninsula for a classic outback-meets-coast itinerary.
- Yorke Peninsula – a more laid-back, family-friendly coastal alternative, with great surfing and fishing spots.
- Nullarbor Plain – continue west from Ceduna across the vast, treeless plain to Western Australia; a bucket-list drive.
- Kangaroo Island – accessible via ferry from Adelaide; pair with the Eyre Peninsula for a wildlife-focused South Australian road trip.
- Adelaide – start or end your journey in the city; it's a 7-hour drive from Adelaide to Port Lincoln, but the scenic route through the Clare Valley is worth the detour.
