Arkaroo Rock is a striking sandstone outcrop in the Hunter Valley, offering one of the region's best bushwalks and a profound connection to its Indigenous heritage. The moderate 2.5 km loop trail leads you through scribbly gum woodlands to a rocky summit with panoramic views over the Brokenback Range and vineyards below. Along the way, interpretive signs share stories of the Wonnarua people, whose ancient rock art—including a rare depiction of a giant kangaroo—can be seen on the sheltered faces of the rock. It's a place where nature, culture, and landscape converge, providing a peaceful counterpoint to the valley's wine-focused attractions.
Highlights & What to See
- Aboriginal Rock Art: Look for the ochre paintings of kangaroos, emus, and ancestral figures, some of which are over 3,000 years old. The site is sacred, so please don't touch.
- Summit Views: From the top, soak up 360-degree views of the Hunter Valley, including the Brokenback Range, Pokolbin vineyards, and distant Barrington Tops.
- Wildflowers and Birdlife: In spring, the trail is dotted with native orchids, flannel flowers, and wattles. Keep an eye out for wedge-tailed eagles and crimson rosellas.
- Interpretive Walk: The well-maintained loop features signage explaining Wonnarua culture, bush tucker plants, and the geology of the area.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for the walk, including time to study the rock art and enjoy the summit. It's best done in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat and catch the best light for photography. Combine with a picnic at the nearby Hunter Valley Gardens or a wine tasting at a Pokolbin cellar door for a full day out.
