Burning Mountain, officially known as Mount Wingen, is a natural wonder that has been smouldering for an estimated 6,000 years. Located in the Upper Hunter Valley, this subterranean coal seam fire slowly creeps through the sandstone, creating a surreal landscape of heat-shattered rocks, bare patches, and wisps of smoke rising from the earth. It's a short but rewarding walk that offers a glimpse into a geological phenomenon that feels almost otherworldly.
Highlights & What to See
- The Smouldering Seam: The main attraction is the coal seam fire itself. As you walk the 4 km return track, you'll notice the ground warming underfoot and see steam and smoke venting from cracks. The vegetation changes dramatically, with heat-tolerant plants giving way to bare, reddened soil.
- Interpretive Signs: Along the trail, informative signs explain the science behind the fire and the unique ecology that has adapted to the heat. Look out for the 'fireweed' that thrives in the warm soil.
- Panoramic Views: The trail climbs to a lookout that offers sweeping views over the Liverpool Range and the surrounding farming country. On a clear day, you can see for miles.
- Wildlife Spotting: Despite the heat, the area supports a surprising variety of wildlife. Keep an eye out for wallabies, kangaroos, and a rich array of birdlife, including wedge-tailed eagles soaring overhead.
- Geological Significance: Burning Mountain is the only known self-heating coal seam in Australia that is accessible to the public. It's a rare chance to see geology in action.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for about 1.5 to 2 hours for the round trip walk, including time to read the interpretive signs and take in the views. The walk is moderate with some gentle inclines, suitable for most fitness levels. Early morning or late afternoon are best to avoid the midday heat and to enjoy softer light for photography. Combine it with a visit to the Hunter Valley wine region for a full day of varied experiences.
