Forster is a laid-back coastal town on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, where the sparkling waters of Wallis Lake meet the Pacific Ocean. With its twin beaches, pristine waterways, and abundant marine life, Forster is a quintessential Aussie beach escape that feels both relaxed and adventurous. It's the perfect place to slow down, soak up the sun, and explore the great outdoors.
Highlights & What to See
- One Mile Beach – A sweeping stretch of golden sand backed by dunes and native bushland, ideal for swimming, surfing, and long walks. The southern end is patrolled in summer.
- Wallis Lake – This vast, shallow estuary is a paradise for kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing. Hire a boat or join a cruise to explore its secluded islands and oyster leases.
- Forster Main Beach – Right in town, this protected beach offers calm waters perfect for families and a scenic ocean pool at the northern end.
- Booti Booti National Park – A stunning coastal reserve with walking trails that wind through rainforest and offer panoramic views from Cape Hawke. Look for goannas and sea eagles.
- The Tanks – A series of World War II-era fuel storage tunnels on the headland, now open for exploration with interpretive displays about the area's wartime history.
- Dolphin & Whale Watching – Bottlenose dolphins are a near-permanent fixture in the lake and ocean; humpback whales pass by from May to November.
Suggested Time to Spend
Forster rewards a relaxed pace. A weekend (two nights) gives you time to hit the beaches, paddle on the lake, and do a walk in Booti Booti. With three to four days, you can add a dolphin cruise, visit the nearby Myall Lakes, and explore the charming fishing villages of Seal Rocks and Pacific Palms. It's an easy stop on a coastal road trip between Sydney and Brisbane.
