Echo Point & Three Sisters
Perched on the edge of a sheer sandstone cliff, Echo Point delivers one of Australia's most iconic views: the Three Sisters rock formation rising from the Jamison Valley. This is the Blue Mountains at its most dramatic, a place where you can witness ancient geology, Aboriginal legend, and eucalypt-scented air all at once. The lookout is wheelchair-accessible and always busy, but the scale of the view makes it feel personal.
Highlights & What to See
- Three Sisters Lookout: The classic panorama of Meehni, Wimlah, and Gunnedoo – named after a local Aboriginal story of three sisters turned to stone. Come at sunrise or late afternoon for golden light and fewer crowds.
- Giant Stairway: A thrilling descent of nearly 1,000 steps carved into the cliff face, leading down to the valley floor. It's a steep return climb, but rewarding for fit hikers.
- Echo Point Visitor Centre: Pick up walking maps, learn about the area's Gundungurra and Darug heritage, and grab a coffee with a view.
- Scenic World (nearby): Ride the world's steepest railway or the Skyway for a bird's-eye view of the Three Sisters and the valley – a fun alternative for families or those short on time.
- Prince Henry Cliff Walk: A gentle 7 km track linking Echo Point with Leura Cascades, offering multiple lookout points over the valley.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least 1–2 hours to soak in the lookout and walk a short section of the Giant Stairway. If you want to descend to the valley floor and return, allow 3–4 hours. Many visitors combine Echo Point with a half-day in Katoomba or Leura, making it a perfect morning or late-afternoon stop on a Blue Mountains self-drive itinerary.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Katoomba: The main town of the Blue Mountains, just a 5-minute drive away, with great cafés, antique shops, and the Carrington Hotel.
- Leura: A prettier, more boutique village known for its gardens, art galleries, and the Leura Cascades – a lovely short walk from Echo Point.
- Wentworth Falls: A spectacular waterfall and lookout, plus a network of walking tracks through lush forest, about 15 minutes south.
- Blackheath: A quieter mountain town with excellent bushwalks, including the Grand Canyon track, and the famous Blackheath Growers Market (Saturdays).
- Jenolan Caves: One of the world's oldest cave systems, about an hour's drive west – worth a day trip for its stunning limestone chambers.
