Nestled in the Avon Valley, just 90 minutes east of Perth, the York Northam Wine Region is a delightful blend of heritage, rolling vineyards, and rustic charm. This is Western Australia’s oldest inland wine region, where historic townscapes meet cool-climate varietals. Think old stone buildings, cellar doors in converted railway stations, and wide, quiet streets that feel a world away from the city. It’s a region that rewards slow exploration – perfect for a relaxed self-drive escape.
Highlights & What to See
- Historic York: Wander the main street lined with beautifully preserved 19th-century buildings, including the iconic York Town Hall and the Settlers House Museum. Don't miss the York Motor Museum for a dose of vintage chrome.
- Cellar door hopping: Sample exceptional shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and verdelho at boutique wineries like Avonbrook Wines (set in an old apple-packing shed) and Mandoon Estate, known for its sprawling lawns and excellent restaurant.
- Northam: The region’s other hub, with a lovely riverside setting on the Avon River. Check out the Morby Cottage heritage precinct and the Northam Heritage Centre.
- Avon River scenic drive: Follow the river between York and Northam for gorgeous farmland views, picnic spots and birdlife – especially striking in spring when the canola fields are in bloom.
- Mount Bakewell Reserve: A short walk near York rewards you with panoramic views over the valley and an excellent picnic perch.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days is ideal to soak up the region’s pace. Spend a day exploring York’s historic streets and a couple of cellar doors, then a second day visiting Northam and the wineries further south. If you’re short on time, a long day trip from Perth is doable, but you’ll miss the peaceful evening atmosphere. For a relaxed itinerary, base yourself in York and use it as a launchpad for morning tastings and afternoon drives.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
