Yaiza
Yaiza is a pristine whitewashed village on the southwestern coast of Lanzarote, often described as the prettiest town on the island. With its low-rise Canarian architecture, volcanic backdrop, and lush palm-filled plazas, it feels like a living museum of traditional island life. The town is a gateway to some of Lanzarote’s most dramatic landscapes, including the otherworldly Timanfaya National Park and the turquoise lagoons of Los Hervideros. Yaiza itself offers a tranquil escape with excellent local restaurants and a strong sense of community.
Highlights & What to See
- Timanfaya National Park – A surreal volcanic landscape of craters and lava fields, best explored by guided coach tour or the famous camel rides at Echadero de los Camellos. Don't miss the geothermal demonstrations at the Islote de Hilario restaurant.
- Los Hervideros – Dramatic sea caves and blowholes where waves crash through volcanic rock, creating spectacular spouts. Visit at high tide for the full effect.
- El Golfo & Charco Verde – A striking green lagoon formed in a volcanic crater, contrasting with black sand and the Atlantic. It's a short walk from the village of El Golfo, just south of Yaiza.
- Playa de Papagayo – A series of pristine golden coves within the Los Ajaches Natural Park, accessible via a dirt track. Perfect for swimming and snorkelling in crystal-clear waters.
- Yaiza Church & Plaza – The 18th-century Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios anchors a peaceful square lined with palm trees and traditional houses. Great for a quiet afternoon coffee.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least two full days to Yaiza and its surroundings. Spend the first day exploring Timanfaya and the coastal highlights like Los Hervideros and El Golfo. Use the second day for a beach day at Papagayo and a leisurely lunch in Yaiza village. If you have a third day, consider hiking in the Los Ajaches mountains or visiting the nearby wine region of La Geria.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
