Stretching across Victoria's sun-baked northwest, the Wimmera is a land of sweeping wheat fields, dramatic silo art, and unexpected wetlands. This is country Australia at its most authentic—where tiny towns boast big stories, and the outback meets the grain belt. The region's centrepiece is the Grampians National Park, but beyond those sandstone peaks lies a quieter, equally compelling landscape of salt lakes, red-gum forests, and a sky that seems to go on forever.
Highlights & What to See
- Grampians National Park (Gariwerd) – Hike to the Pinnacle for jaw-dropping views over the ranges, spot kangaroos at dawn, and seek out ancient Aboriginal rock-art sites like Bunjil's Shelter.
- Silo Art Trail – Follow the Wimmera's famous outdoor gallery of giant murals painted on grain silos in towns like Sheep Hills, Rupanyup, and Brim—each a masterpiece of rural storytelling.
- Lake Hindmarsh – Australia's largest freshwater lake when full, this birdlife hotspot is perfect for a picnic, a paddle, or simply watching the sunset turn the water pink.
- Horsham – The region's hub, with the excellent Horsham Regional Art Gallery and the lush botanic gardens along the Wimmera River.
- Little Desert National Park – A misnamed gem of heathlands and mallee scrub, brilliant for wildflowers in spring and spotting emus and echidnas.
- Dimboola – Home to the quirky Pink Lake (actually a salt lake) and the historic Dimboola Hotel, a classic country pub.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give the Wimmera at least three to four days to do it justice. Spend the first day exploring the Grampians, then dedicate one full day to the Silo Art Trail, looping through the wheat towns. A third day can be split between Lake Hindmarsh and the Little Desert. If you're driving the Melbourne–Adelaide route, two days makes a satisfying stopover—focus on the silos and one Grampians walk.
