Whyalla, a rugged industrial port on the Spencer Gulf, is South Australia’s steel city with a surprising soft side. It’s a place where giant ore carriers and shipbuilding yards meet calm, blue waters and a laidback outback-meets-coast vibe. For self-drive travellers, Whyalla is a rewarding detour off the Eyre Peninsula trail, offering wild marine encounters, fascinating industrial heritage, and a genuine sense of regional life.
Highlights & What to See
- Whyalla Maritime Museum – Dive into the city's steel and shipbuilding story, plus the HMAS Whyalla, a WWII corvette you can actually board. It’s a hands-on history lesson with a salty breeze.
- Whyalla Foreshore & Main Street – Stroll the revamped foreshore with its playground, jetty, and cafes. Grab a coffee at one of the local spots and watch the sun set over the gulf.
- Point Lowly & the Cuttlefish Spectacle – From May to August, thousands of giant Australian cuttlefish gather to breed in the shallow waters off Point Lowly. Snorkelling among these kaleidoscopic creatures is an underwater wildlife highlight few places on earth can match.
- Whyalla Conservation Park – Just north of town, this park protects remnant mallee woodland and is home to western grey kangaroos and a surprising variety of birdlife. A short walk offers a taste of the Eyre Peninsula’s interior.
- Iron Knob – A short drive inland, this historic mining town is where Australia’s iron ore story began. The rust-red landscape and abandoned mine structures feel like a frontier ghost town.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give Whyalla at least a full day and one overnight. Use the afternoon to explore the maritime museum and foreshore, then head out to Point Lowly for sunset (and cuttlefish if it’s winter). The next morning, drive to Iron Knob or take a walk in the conservation park before continuing your Eyre Peninsula road trip. If you’re keen on the cuttlefish, plan for two nights so you can snorkel on consecutive days.
