Whitianga is a sun-drenched coastal town on the Coromandel Peninsula, where the Mercury Bay meets a labyrinth of volcanic estuaries. It's a base for exploring the iconic Cathedral Cove, the steaming Hot Water Beach, and the wild surf of the eastern coast. The town itself has a laid-back, slightly bohemian vibe, with a lively marina, excellent seafood spots, and a calendar full of summer events.
Highlights & What to See
- Cathedral Cove – A magnificent natural rock arch that frames a pristine white-sand beach. Accessible via a scenic coastal walk (about 45 minutes each way) or by kayak from Hahei. Arrive early to avoid crowds.
- Hot Water Beach – Dig your own hot pool in the sand at low tide, where geothermal water bubbles up through the shore. Bring a spade and arrive two hours either side of low tide for the best experience.
- Whitianga Rock – A dramatic volcanic outcrop with a short walking track offering panoramic views over the Mercury Bay and the town. Look for ancient Māori pā (fortified village) terraces.
- Mercury Bay Estate – A boutique vineyard perched on a hillside, producing excellent Syrah and Viognier. The tasting room has a terrace with sweeping views of the bay.
- Lost Spring Thermal Pools – A series of lush, tropical-themed geothermal pools, ideal for a relaxing soak after a day of hiking. The on-site café serves good coffee and light meals.
- Buffalo Beach – The main town beach, a long stretch of golden sand perfect for swimming, paddleboarding, or a sunset stroll. It's sheltered and family-friendly.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2-3 full days in Whitianga, which allows time for Cathedral Cove, Hot Water Beach, and a boat tour of the Mercury Bay's marine reserve. If you're short on time, a single day can cover the main highlights, but you'll miss the chance to kayak or hike at a relaxed pace. For a deeper experience, add a fourth day to explore the nearby bush walks and the charming village of Coromandel Town.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Coromandel Town – A historic gold-mining settlement with artisan galleries, the famous Driving Creek Railway, and great cafes. A 40-minute drive over the hill.
- Cook's Beach – A tranquil, crescent-shaped beach just south of Whitianga, ideal for swimming and kayaking. It's less crowded than Buffalo Beach.
- Shakespeare Cliff – A short walk from the town centre offering exceptional views of the Mercury Bay and the Pacific Ocean. A great spot for sunrise photography.
- Thames – The historic port town at the southern end of the Coromandel Peninsula, with a well-preserved main street and the Karangahake Gorge walks nearby. About an hour's drive.
