Wheeler Peak

Rising to 2,309 metres, Wheeler Peak is the highest point in the Namadgi National Park and the Australian Capital Territory. This granite monolith offers a challenging but rewarding day hike through subalpine woodlands and across exposed rocky slopes, with panoramic views over the Brindabella Ranges and, on clear days, all the way to the Snowy Mountains. The trail is a true wilderness experience, far from the crowds of the nearby coast.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Dedicate a full day for the Wheeler Peak summit hike: allow 6–8 hours round trip, plus time for breaks and photos. If you're short on time or prefer a gentler outing, combine a morning walk to Yankee Hat (2–3 hours) with a picnic at the Orroral Valley campground. For multi-day itineraries, Wheeler Peak can be a highlight of a 3–5 day self-drive through the ACT's high country, pairing with other Namadgi walks and a night in Canberra.
