Jutting into the Tasman Sea at the northern edge of Sydney Harbour National Park, West Head is a wild, windswept headland that delivers some of the most dramatic coastal views in the region. This is where the blue of the Pacific meets the deep green of the bush, and where you can gaze across the water at Barrenjoey Headland, the Central Coast, and on a clear day, the distant escarpments of the Blue Mountains. It's a place of rugged beauty, Aboriginal heritage, and superb walking trails, perfect for a half-day escape from the city.
Highlights & What to See
- West Head Lookout – The star attraction: a panoramic viewing platform offering one of the best harbour views in Sydney. Spot the Barrenjoey Lighthouse, Pittwater, and even the city skyline.
- Resolute Beach – A secluded, white-sand beach accessible via a short bushwalk. It's often uncrowded and feels like a secret paradise.
- Aboriginal Engravings – Scattered across the headland are ancient rock carvings of fish, kangaroos, and human figures. The site at Guringai Track is particularly well-preserved and offers a tangible link to the area's Indigenous heritage.
- Coastal Walking Trails – The West Head Walk (2.5 km one way) winds through heathland and scribbly gum forest, with lookout points over the ocean. For a longer hike, connect to the Resolute Track (4 km loop) that takes you down to the beach.
- Pittwater Views – On the western side, look out over the calm waters of Pittwater, a popular spot for sailing and kayaking.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers spend between two and three hours here, which allows time for the main lookout, a short walk to the engravings, and a quick dip at Resolute Beach if the weather's warm. If you're keen to do the full loop walk and have a leisurely picnic with views, budget half a day (4–5 hours). The headland is best visited in the morning when the light is soft and the crowds are thin, or late afternoon for golden hour over the ocean.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park – Directly adjacent, this park offers more Aboriginal sites, the Basin Track, and the popular Bobbin Head area with picnic spots and a marina.
- Newport – A laid-back beach suburb with a good selection of restaurants and the Newport Arms Hotel, a classic pub with water views.
- Avalon Beach – A smaller, less touristy beach with a village feel, perfect for a relaxed lunch.
- Barrenjoey Lighthouse – Combine a visit to West Head with a walk up to this historic lighthouse on the tip of Palm Beach for sweeping views in the opposite direction.
