Perched on the rocky headland of Barrenjoey Peninsula, this historic lighthouse offers sweeping coastal views and a glimpse into Australia's maritime past. Built in 1881, the sandstone tower stands 20 metres tall and is a beloved landmark of Sydney's northern beaches. The short but steep walk to the summit rewards with panoramic vistas of Palm Beach, Pittwater, and the Tasman Sea.
Highlights & What to See
- Barrenjoey Headland Walk: A 1.3 km (one-way) track from the car park to the lighthouse, passing through coastal heath and offering stunning ocean views. The final stretch is a steep set of stairs, but the payoff is immense.
- Lighthouse Tower: While you can't climb the tower itself, the grounds are open to explore. The keeper's cottage has been restored and occasionally opens for events or guided tours – check the local calendar.
- Palm Beach: The iconic golden beach at the base of the headland is perfect for swimming, surfing, or a leisurely stroll. The southern end is patrolled in summer.
- Whale Watching: From May to November, the headland is a prime spot to see humpback whales migrating along the coast. Bring binoculars for the best views.
- Sunset Views: The lighthouse area is a favourite for sunset photography, with the sky lighting up over Pittwater and the distant Central Coast.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for about 1.5 to 2 hours for the walk and time at the top. If you want to include a swim or lunch at Palm Beach, allow half a day. The walk is best done in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat and crowds. Combine with a picnic or a coffee at the Boathouse on Palm Beach for a classic Northern Beaches day.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Pittwater: Explore the calm waters by kayak, stand-up paddleboard, or boat. Rentals are available at Palm Beach and Church Point.
- Bilgola Beach: A quieter surf beach with a scenic headland walk, located between Avalon and Newport.
