Deep in New Zealand's North Island, the Waitomo Caves are a subterranean wonderland of limestone formations, glowworms, and underground rivers. This is a place where you can float through dark caverns under a canopy of bioluminescent stars, or abseil into the abyss for a truly adrenaline-fuelled adventure. The name 'Waitomo' comes from the Māori words 'wai' (water) and 'tomo' (hole), and the caves have been a sacred site for local iwi for centuries. Whether you're a nature lover, a thrill-seeker, or a geology buff, the Waitomo Caves offer an unforgettable journey into the earth.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend a full day exploring one or two caves and a half-day activity like black water rafting. If you're short on time, a half-day can cover the Glowworm Grotto and a walk on the Waitomo Walkway. For the full experience, allow two days: one for the classic cave tours and one for adventure activities. The caves are open year-round, but summer (December–February) offers warmer weather for the walkway and water activities.
