Rotorua is a geothermal wonderland on New Zealand's North Island, where the earth literally steams and bubbles. The scent of sulfur hangs in the air as geysers erupt, hot springs steam, and mud pools pop. It's also the heart of Māori culture, offering immersive experiences that connect you to the land and its stories. Whether you're soaking in a natural hot pool or exploring a volcanic crater, Rotorua is a sensory feast.
Highlights & What to See
- Te Puia – A Māori cultural centre and geothermal reserve, home to the colossal Pohutu Geyser (erupting up to 30 metres) and a kiwi conservation centre. Watch Māori carving and weaving demonstrations.
- Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland – A surreal landscape of neon-green pools, the Champagne Pool, and the Lady Knox Geyser (erupts daily at 10:15 am). Arrive early to see the geyser show.
- Redwood Forest – Walk or bike among towering California redwoods; the Redwoods Treewalk is a series of suspension bridges lit with lanterns at night.
- Polynesian Spa – Soak in mineral-rich hot pools overlooking Lake Rotorua. Choose from public pools or private spas; the alkaline and acid pools have different therapeutic properties.
- Tamaki Māori Village – An evening cultural experience with a traditional hangi feast, storytelling, and performances. Book ahead as it's very popular.
- Lake Rotorua – Take a cruise, kayak, or stroll the lakefront. The Ohinemutu Māori village on the shore has a stunning carved meeting house and church.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least two full days to experience Rotorua's highlights without rushing. Day one: visit Te Puia in the morning, then explore the Redwood Forest and Polynesian Spa in the afternoon. Day two: head to Wai-O-Tapu early (it's 30 minutes south), then spend the evening at Tamaki Māori Village. If you have a third day, consider a day trip to the Tongariro National Park or Mount Tarawera for hiking.
