Villa Unión is a dusty, sun-bleached town in Argentina's La Rioja province, known as the gateway to the otherworldly Talampaya National Park and the dramatic Valle de la Luna. This no-frills settlement offers a genuine slice of provincial life, with a laid-back plaza and a few essential services. For travellers driving the Ruta 40, it's the perfect base to explore the region's surreal red-rock canyons, petrified forests, and pre-Columbian ruins.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most travellers base themselves in Villa Unión for two full days. Day one is best spent on a guided tour of Talampaya (half-day) and a self-drive exploration of Ischigualasto (allow at least 4 hours). Day two could include a morning walk in Quebrada de la Flecha and a relaxed afternoon soaking up the town's slow pace. If you're short on time, a single day trip from La Rioja city (2.5 hours east) is possible but rushed.
