The Victorian Alps National Park is a sprawling alpine wonderland in northeastern Victoria, offering a dramatic landscape of snow-capped peaks, wildflower-strewn meadows, and ancient snow gum forests. This is a place where the air is crisp, the trails are endless, and the views stretch to the horizon. Whether you're a hiker, mountain biker, or simply seeking solitude in nature, the park delivers an authentic high-country experience that feels a world away from the coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Mount Bogong – Victoria’s highest peak (1986 m), a challenging but rewarding day hike with panoramic views across the Alps.
- Falls Creek – A year-round alpine village with skiing in winter and superb mountain biking and hiking in summer.
- Mount Hotham – Another iconic resort area, with stunning ridgeline walks and the famous Razorback Trail.
- The Australian Alps Walking Track – A long-distance trail that traverses the park; even a short section offers a taste of the wild.
- Snow gum forests – These twisted, silver-barked trees are a signature of the alpine landscape, particularly beautiful in mist or snow.
- Wildflowers in spring – From November to January, the meadows explode with billy buttons, alpine daisies, and trigger plants.
- Bright – A charming gateway town at the park’s edge, famous for its autumn colours and excellent food scene.
Suggested Time to Spend
To properly experience the park, plan at least two full days. This allows for a major hike (like Mount Bogong) plus a scenic drive along the Great Alpine Road, with stops at Falls Creek and Mount Hotham. If you’re keen on multi-day trekking, budget three to five days for a section of the Australian Alps Walking Track. In winter, skiing or snowshoeing can easily fill a long weekend. The park is vast, so prioritise one or two areas rather than trying to see it all.
