Valle De Tena
Cradled in the heart of the Spanish Pyrenees, Valle de Tena is a dramatic valley of emerald meadows, limestone peaks, and crystalline lakes. This is a land where shepherds still follow ancient trails, and the air smells of wild thyme and pine. Whether you're a hiker, a skier, or simply a seeker of mountain serenity, this valley delivers authentic Pyrenean soul without the crowds of the French side.
Highlights & What to See
- Hike to Ibón de Bachimaña – One of the most stunning alpine lakes in the Pyrenees, set beneath the hulking Pico de los Infiernos. The trail from Balneario de Panticosa is a moderate day hike with views that will leave you speechless.
- Panticosa Ski Resort & Spa – In winter, carve down slopes with panoramic views; in summer, ride the cable car to the lake and soak in the thermal spa at the historic Balneario de Panticosa.
- Formigal Ski Area – Part of the vast Aramón ski domain, this resort offers excellent intermediate runs and a lively après-ski scene in the village of Formigal.
- Sallent de Gállego – A picture-perfect stone village with a Romanesque church, cobbled streets, and a dammed lake that reflects the peaks. Perfect for a wander and a coffee at a terrace café.
- Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park – A short drive south, this UNESCO World Heritage site offers the legendary Ordesa Valley, with sheer cliffs and the mighty Monte Perdido (lost mountain) as its crown.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give the valley at least two full days to breathe. Use one day for a signature hike (like Ibón de Bachimaña or the Ordesa Valley floor) and another to explore the villages and drive the scenic mountain passes. If you ski, plan three to four days to enjoy both Panticosa and Formigal. The valley works well as a three-night stop on a Pyrenees road trip between France and Spain.
