Just south of Mission Beach and hemmed by the dense, green slopes of the Walter Hill Range, Tully is the unofficial wet capital of Australia – and wears the title with pride. This sugarcane town, with its giant golden gumboot monument, is the launchpad for white-water rafting on the Tully River, one of the country’s best commercially rafted rivers. Beyond the rapids, it’s a gateway to misty rainforest, cassowary country, and the sugar-sweet life of the Cassowary Coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Tully River Rafting – Grade 3–4 rapids through World Heritage rainforest, best after rain (which is often). A half-day trip is an adrenaline highlight of any Far North Queensland itinerary.
- Golden Gumboot – The 8-metre-tall gumboot marks the town’s record rainfall (7.9 metres in 1950). Climb inside for views and a quirky museum of wet-weather memorabilia.
- Tully Gorge National Park – A short drive west, this park offers walks along the gorge rim, swimming holes (check for crocs), and views of the river canyon from the lookout.
- Mission Beach & Cassowary Coast – Twenty minutes east, the string of beaches (Wongaling, South Mission) is prime cassowary habitat. Join a guided walk or just keep your eyes peeled on the road.
- Paronella Park – A 45-minute drive south in Mena Creek, this Spanish-style castle built in the 1930s with waterfalls, gardens and a rainforest setting is an unforgettable detour.
Suggested Time to Spend
One full day is enough to raft the Tully River in the morning, then explore the gorge and gumboot in the afternoon. If you add Paronella Park or a Mission Beach cassowary walk, budget two days. Tully itself is compact – the main drag can be walked in 15 minutes – but the surrounding attractions demand a car.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Mission Beach – 20 min east for beaches, cafés, and cassowary spotting.
- Innisfail – 30 min north for art-deco architecture and the Mamu Tropical Skywalk.
- Cardwell – 45 min south for the Cardwell Spa Pool and Hinchinbrook Island views.
- Paronella Park – 45 min south for the fairy-tale castle and gardens.
- Wet Tropics World Heritage Area – The entire region is a rainforest wonderland; the drive from Tully to the Atherton Tablelands via the Palmerston Highway is stunning.
